Description

Take home this large, liquid-tight Ukhamba (lid fits inside the top) basket made by Zulu women out of Illala palm fronds...truly unique!

As per the age-old traditional culture of the northeastern KwaZulu Natal in South Africa, Illala palm fronds are dyed using natural materials and woven into watertight baskets by Zulu women. Baskets can take 30 days to weave and the artistry carries different meanings, making each a unique and beautiful masterpiece!

Baskets of Africa, founded in 2002, supports weavers who are crop and livestock farmers weaving baskets to supplement their family's income. Per Baskets of Africa, "By purchasing one of these unique creations you are contributing to the preservation of African culture and the weavers' financial independence". Enjoy this treasure in many ways!
