Description

The Workout

BollyX is a Bollywood-inspired dance-fitness program that combines dynamic choreography with the hottest music from around the world. At the very core of a BollyX workout is the inspiration it draws from the music and dance of Bollywood, the film industry of India. BollyX utilizes high-intensity interval training (HIIT) principles to provide health benefits to the participant. The class consists of intense, high impact dance moves (which drive the heart rate up) interspersed with moderately-intense, low impact moves (allowing for a short recovery) to give participants an exhilarating yet effective workout. The benefits of the BollyX workout extend into other areas as well, including improvements in both coordination and mind/body awareness. Simply put, this total body workout builds strength, endurance, confidence, and community- the essential ingredients needed for participants to unleash their inner rockstar.

The Instructor

After taking BollyX classes in 2014, Tom was hooked! He later became a certified BollyX instructor in September 2015 and began teaching shortly after.

By day, Tom works in software sales and MEMS (Microelectromechanical systems). By night (and weekend) he enjoys taking and teaching BollyX classes, exploring Massachusetts, making music and watching movies (especially Bollywood films with big dance numbers).

Tom, originally from Long Island, NY, came to Beantown in 2008 to attend Boston University. He graduated in 2012 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Manufacturing Engineering.

“Diversity through dance”

At the Tony Williams Dance Center, our mission is to provide quality dance instruction to a diverse urban community. We believe that quality dance builds empathy, a strong sense of mentoring and progressive youth leadership. This form of creative social integration is a model for developing a sense of unity.

Tony Williams is a dance pioneer and retired international ballet star. Williams’ dance philosophy uses the arts to unite diverse communities in Boston, having had direct experience on how transformative the arts can be on young lives.

As a young man, he gained access to Boston Ballet‘s dance program and progressed to become their first African-American principal dancer. From there he danced lead roles with the Joffery Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and danced all over the world. When Williams retired, he returned to Jamaica Plain, where it all began, and opened a dance school, which celebrated classical dance and emerging dance forms. Not long after, he produced the beloved Urban Nutcracker which annually enjoys a successful run downtown. Widely respected as a progressive dance educator, Williams has won the Dance Teacher Magazine Award and Wheelock Family Theater’s Wheel Award. In 2014, he founded the Tony Williams Ballet and expanded his dance school to Concord, Mass.
