Feng Zhang has been hailed as “one of the world’s most groundbreaking scientists” and one of Popular Science’s “Brilliant Ten.” At the age of 34, Feng Zhang is an MIT professor and the youngest core institute member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. He has pioneered some of the most transformative technologies in biomedicine in recent years, including optogenetics and TALEs, but he is best known for his work with CRISPR-Cas9, the revolutionary gene-editing tool that’s been making headlines recently for its potential to correct the genetic errors that cause many disorders caused by faulty genes. Among his many awards and accolades is the Canada Gairdner International Award, a prestigious award that is seen as a precursor to the Nobel.
