Description

Under the Tuscan Sun

1 bottle of Quivira 2013 Montepulciano/Sangiovese, Dry Creek Valley

Only 300 cases produced and currently sold out online.

Almost 10 years ago a small patch of Montepulciano was planted at our Wine Creek Ranch home estate to evaluate how the lesser known central Italian red variety, Montepulciano, would do in our Dry Creek Valley terroir. From the very beginning what stood out is how naturally balanced the vines were, meaning they need very little extra care other than pruning and our normal Biodynamic practices. The shoots naturally stop growing at the right length at the right time, the grapes ripen with a perfect balance of sugar and acid. While this natural balance carries over into the wine, we have found a stunning terraced, hillside Sangiovese site that perfectly complements the rustic charm of our Montepulciano, bringing an amazing synergy to the finished blend where the sum is truly greater than the parts.

These two varieties are among the mostly widely planted in Tuscany, home to many noble wines. The unique characteristics of each varietal are magnified in Dry Creek Valley terroir suave, velvety and luscious Sangiovese blended with the more rustic and earthy Montepulciano yields a wine that is unique to Quivira, is the envy of all of Tuscany and elicits interest from those across the hills in Napa Valley! Layered aromas of dark cherries, saddle leather and fresh herbs lead to tightly framed flavors of black fruits, earth, sweet oak and a slight hint of Tuscan herbs. The tannins and fruit intensity carry the very long finish. This wine will continue to evolve well for the next 3 to 5 years.

We are committed to making the finest wines that showcase the unique terroir of this remarkable Dry Creek Valley location. Quivira specializes in small-lot wines from varietals specifically matched to the soils, seasonal strength of sun, and coastal influenced nights that accentuate the unique characteristics that flow from the vine directly to the wine. The quality of our wines is an honest reflection of our commitment to this land, Biodynamic agriculture and our dedication to artisan winemaking.
