Description
“One of the best trombonists in New York” (New York Times) joins forces with “one of Brazil’s best kept secrets” (EJazz News) to lead an ensemble in this bi-hemispheric ragtime revival! Latin Jazz master trombonist and Catskill Jazz Factory all-star Chris Washburne returns to the Catskills alongside Brazilian virtuoso pianist André Mehmari, master New Orleans clarinetist Evan Christopher, and vocalist Sarah Elizabeth Charles for the first installment of a two-year project in centennial tribute to the “King of Ragtime Writers” Scott Joplin and an exploration of the international roots of jazz performing the best of the Cuban Habanera and Brazilian Choro traditions.
Chris Washburne is one of those rare musicians whose musical activities cross many styles and cultural borders. From early in his career he refused to be pigeon-holed as just being a jazz or classical player, but instead has continually pursued a diverse path. He received his Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology at Columbia University, is currently Associate Professor of Music and Found Director of the Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance Program at Columbia University and has published numerous articles on jazz, Latin jazz, and salsa.
