Description
Dr. Richmond is an artist and teacher who began using art to cope with learning disabilities (in the areas of reading, writing and math) and autism spectrum disorder. Richmond is an advocate for individuals with disabilities, abuse, and women's issues. On this mask, she presents some of the hidden emotions that arise when a person is coping with a terminal illness. On the added painting, titled "The Mask" she showcases how death strips all humans of their perceived individuality.
Between 2013 and 2014, Dr. Richmond lost 3 amazing women in her life to Cancer. Each one of those women left part of their personalities branded on her heart. In the midst of their deaths, however, Dr. Richmond noticed that those in witness of their deaths failed to understand or cope with the powerful emotions that each of these women experienced through their passing. Because of that, these women were denied their individuality as they died, often having to mask what they felt in sacrifice to the feelings of those living. This project is Richmond's way of saying that she saw that tribute of love.
