About Nancy Fleming and Bob Smallwood
Nancy is a retired nurse-midwife. She and her husband Bob Smallwood care for their grandchildren (ages 9 and 11; and 1-1/2 and 6 months) three days a week while her daughters, who both live nearby, work. They have two friendly standard poodles (non-shedding).
"We live in a contemporary-style home we built set in a older neighborhood approx-imately 25 miles west of Chicago’s Loop. The location is convenient for both auto and train travel into the city and has many possibilities for outdoor activities (such as hiking and biking) as well as sightseeing or shopping in Chicago. We have an extra car as well for guests arriving by plane who would like some auto independence, and also have bikes available for guests to use. Chicago has some great restaurants and wonderful entertainment – We can help you with typical “tourist information.” We are also familiar with both hiking and biking (and shopping!) opportunities.
The back yard is completely fenced and planted with both vegetables and perennials – no grass. We have 3 small fish ponds, one of which is 4 feet deep, so small children would need to be supervised while playing."

Testimonial from past winner:
"My husband and I were the high bidders on this destination in 2006. We, along with our 6-year old daughter, took our trip in May of 2007. We decided to make a little adventure of it and drove to Grand Rapids to take the train into Chicago. We were met at the station by our hosts Nancy Fleming and Bill Schafer and they chauffeured us to their home. They have a lovely apartment with a small kitchen, a spacious living room with pull out couch/dining area and a private bedroom and full bathroom. Nancy and Bill were gracious hosts and very accommodating. Our daughter loved their 2 standard poodles! Nancy made a delicious breakfast each morning, different every day, and they provided a car for us to use. We used the vehicle to go out to have a delicious dinner one night, included in the "package", and to get to the train station each day so we could head into Chicago. They also had bikes for us to use and we rode to the Lincoln Park zoo on the day we arrived. We packed a lot of fun into the 3 days and nights we were there. We went to The Aquarium, The Museum of Natural History, The Planetarium and to the top of the Sear's Tower, amazing views. We rode buses, took taxi's and train's, ate good food and wandered around downtown Chicago. It was a great experience for our daughter, Anna, she loves the city, and we all had a wonderful time. We will definitely bid on this offering again!"
