Berkeley Springs is a lively small town that traces its history to before the Revolutionary War when it became famous for its reviving spring waters that drew people from far and wide who came to bathe in the public bath. (It is said that George Washington was a frequent visitor!) True to its history, the town has half a dozen moderately priced spas that offer a wide range of services, including a "rustic" roman bathhouse and spa operated by the State of West Virginia on the site of the original bath house. There are a number of art and antique dealers who have made Berkeley Springs their home and the town has several restaurants, shops, and an old movie theater that has first run movies on weekends. It is also near the Cacapon River which is great for float trips in season. Also within 10 minutes is Hancock, Maryland, which is the trail head for the Western Maryland Rail Trail that runs for 20 miles along the C&O canal. Hancock also has a number of small shops and restaurants.
