Description

With the possible exception of a few establishments in rural Oklahoma (The Museum of Spoons That Have Become Rusty After Being Run Over By Combines), most museums offer widespread appeal. The Asian Art Museum, home to one of the most comprehensive Asian art collections in the world, is no exception. Its a fascinating place in and of itself, but one way to make it even more fascinating, especially for children, is to tour the museum with a docent. Here's an example of touring a museum without a docent: You come across a rock. A person who believes he will see the rock better if he looks at it through his iPhone obscures the display placard. You move on from the rock. Now here's the same tour with a docent: You come upon a rock. But the docent tells you its not just a rock; its a moon rock. As in a rock from the moon. And then the docent explains about how back in 1969 Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, while sailing across the Sea of Tranquility in their moon boat, battled a squadron of Red Electrodes to obtain this rock, bravely risking life and limb in the pursuit of knowledge. The Red Electrodes were ferocious! Neil and Buzz barely made it back alive! And now here you are, looking at the very same rock. Think your kids would enjoy that? And that is how docents make things more fascinating (the stories you hear may vary).
