Description
"Sailor's Guitar" 29 1/2 x13" Ewer shaped vessel—with colorful sailer playing guitar—2012
Mattie Leeds has been making pottery full time for 42 years. He studied classical Chinese painting with Y.C. Chaing, a master of Chinese arts, he studied pottery with Michael Frimkiss, a renowned potter and student of Peter Voulkos.
Since 1980 Mattie has studied the figure. Creating portraits that tell each models unique story. His historical depictions of Santa Cruz colorful characters have been a rich part of the cities galleries and museums. Using bright colors to cover his large scale ceramics. Though he has ventured far from his classical education, he still uses his Chinese brush.
Mattie is now creating ceramic sculpture using techniques developed from earlier works. His latest pieces explore: the past, the future, space, and monsters.
Beyond the studio
A visit to Mattie's Bonny Doon studio and sculpture garden on Empire Grade is a magical treat. If you have never been, we highly recommend stopping in soon!
Mattie has unified his beautiful hand built home and property into an impressive sculpture garden. Gigantic ceramic vessels embrace the landscape as if growing out of the earth, and nurtured by the sun. An old fishing vessel lays grounded behind a serpentine wall of rolling ocean waves built of river rock, glass, ceramic objects, and musical instruments. The rolling stone waves dance across the property to end at The Chinese Keystone Arch, and an enormous neon Chop Suey sign keeps guard over all. The gallery is a place where Art , Nature and Life become one.
