Description

Shona Stone sculpture is acclaimed as the most important form of art to have emerged from Africa during the 20th century and became a contemporary art phenomenon worldwide. This unique style of stone art emerged from Africa only in the last forty years to find its place in art galleries, museums, and private collections worldwide.

Zimbabwe is the only country in Africa with large amounts of stone that can be carved. The stone was so important to the people of Zimbabwe that the word ‘Shona’ is derived from a word from their native language that means ‘house of stone.’ There is no technical artistic training in Shona sculpture. Sculpting skills are passed down through families.

This Fish Shona Sculpture is hand-carved, green opal stone from Zimbabwe. Signed by the artist "Layson".

Dimensions: 21" x 18 1/2" (bottom of stand to top of fish).  Stand is removable.
