Tesserae: Pebbles

Making mosaics is a passion. My favorite materials are smalti and stones, like pebbles, slate or marble. My abstract mosaics often describe a feeling or thought. This little pebble mosaic is called, in German, um.kreisen. This means to circle or revolve. Some pebbles are arranged in a circle…but they only touch the big pebble, they don’t really revolve it. The dot in the middle of the word signifies that it means more than only the single word (nearly all of my titles have one or more dots). The beholder should think about it and find his own story in the mosaic. My intention is, that there arises a dialog between the beholder and the mosaic - the title is only an impulse.

Looking for a unique mosaic language, I experimented with different materials, always stressing, that mosaic is a special form of painting for me; sometimes even gluing mosaics onto canvas. I enjoy being inspired by the material (smalti, pebbles, marble). The characteristics of the material: the reflections of smalti, the rough surfaces of the broken natural stone, the liveliness of the surfaces, uneven surfaces and shadows in the structure are important aspects in the design of my abstract mosaics.”
