Tesserae: Tempered plates, dishes, found items, custom made gold elements
“The Kiss, a painting, is attributed to Gustav Klimt’s Golden Period from 1907-1908. So why ‘The Kiss’? I wanted to do a mosaic that most people can relate to; a touch that can express love, respect, greeting, friendship.
My mosaics are put together from mostly dishes and found items. I love the thrill of the hunt for dishes from second hand stores and rummage sales. I often wonder where these items came from and the people they belonged to.
My challenge was first to find the right dishes to use in this mosaic. The second challenge was to put it together in a way that would look like the painting. The background of the mosaic is from plates that I had picked up years ago where someone had painted on the designs. They were tempered glass; which fractures into small pieces when broken. Most of the other tesserae were from dishes and found items. The golden circles I had made by a very talented artist on Etsy. Her name is Bobbi and her shop on Etsy is ‘The Potters Hands’. She made the circles just perfect right down to the real gold she used on them. She donated her time & materials to make these for me.
A lot of thought and love went into making this mosaic. I hope whoever wins it will find much happiness in knowing how much joy and happiness their purchase will bring to others because of their kindness and generosity.”
