Getting kids to think outside of the "American box" is vitally important in this brave, new, globalized world in which America retains its importance, but isn't necessarily the center of the universe it once was. The authors examine the arguments for exposing kids to the world outside their immediate experience and give tons of practical advice on how to do it. This is a must read for parents who want to do well by their kids and prepare them for international success.

Format: Paperback

The Berdan’s book is an excellent guide for practically preparing children to thrive in an increasingly globalized world, but it is more than that: it is a celebration of the new perspectives and widening of horizons that exposure to other cultures and languages can have on a child. As someone who became interested in Russia at the age of twelve and is now working there, the experiences of the many people interviewed for the book ring true. For many of those interviewed, it was exposure to a country or people group at a young age that fascinated them and eventually led them to a global career.

Besides giving practical advice to parents on how to naturally integrate a global perspective into their family’s everyday life, the book’s focus on learning foreign languages is especially pertinent to today’s children. Although proficiency in a foreign language is an increasingly marketable skill, children are not often provided with the opportunities to study a second language at a young age. This issue is treated not as an unchangeable state of affairs, but as a solvable problem that parents can take part in at the grassroots level. An encouraging read full of practical ideas, I would recommend this book to any parents who desire to plant the seeds of a global perspective in their children.

Format: Kindle Edition

Today's world is both far bigger and far smaller than the world I grew up in. Bigger, because even little kids have heard of places like China and India and Brazil - and NOT as places which are poor, so kids should clean their plates in honor of the starving in. Smaller, because now more than ever, what happens in Beijing or Brasilia is going to affect people growing up in Buffalo or Boise. This book helps parents and teachers help the kids in their care grow up ready to meet and embrace the challenges of the big-little world they face. I hope and believe that parents reading it will raise kids ready to be part of a positive re-engagement of America with the rest of our changing and growing world.
