Description
10 1/2" x 7" x 2" Hand carved poplar, acrylic paint, found object
This piece started as a found object. In the wood shop, Ken crafted new handles out of poplar, which is a fairly straight forward task. Then off to the studio to be finished out with acrylic paint, always an elusive task.
After thirty years as a firefighter, he retired and found himself casting about for something to do. Aways drawn to contemporary art, he began to experiment with materials he was familiar with - wood and paint - making sculputre, studio furniture and painting. Beling largely self-taught allows a certain kind of freedom to explore the use of materials, but creates difficulty in discussing what he does in art-speak. He refers to his work as nonobjective - a combination of shapes, marks, colors, textures and happy accidents.
