Description

Ever wondered about those early national championships listed on the facade at the closed end of the Stadium? Join Harvard Magazine football columnist Dick Friedman '73 for a brisk look back at "When Harvard Was Number One (Really!)" Friedman tells the story of the great teams from the nine-season (1908-16) tenure of coach Percy D. Haughton, A.B. 1899, which produced national champions in 1910, '12 and '13, a 33-game unbeaten streak and immortal stars such as Charlie Brickley, Eddie Mahan and Tack Hardwick, all of whom were cheered along by First Fan Theodore Roosevelt (A.B. 1880). Along the way Friedman details how in those years the sport evolved from a rugby-like scrum into the modern game we see today, and illustrates how football affected college life.
