Description

Former longtime Union Square Café barkeeps Michael Lagnese and Jonny Cohen recently opened bibi, their second wine bar in New York. Already owners of one of the city’s most popular wine spots, the 8th Street winecellar in the West Village, the team heads east to 4th Street between Avenues A and B.

8th Street Winecellar’s 7 year run of popularity on a block that has certainly seen it’s share of ups and downs is a testament to the duo’s commitment to strong neighborhood friendships, and exceptional hospitality.  They take this with them to Alphabet city, along with Bonny McKenzie, formerly from 8th Street, as managing partner of bibi.  Bonny brings with her not only her years of strong restaurant skills and barwomanship, but also her great, great grandfather and the bar’s namesake, bibi.

Their philosophy of a laid back attitude and atmosphere melds well with the Gary Cruz designed space that features soft textures, soft lighting and comfort in the small yet airy spot.

Chef Carlo Soranno has put together a wine and beer friendly small plates menu featuring artisanal cheeses, charcuterie, along with Bacon Wrapped Country Pate, Meatballs Marinara, Summer Tomato Salad, Brushette and Panini.  The shareable plates are seasonal, but his take on a Pastrami Reuben is sure to be a fixture year round.

The approachable wine and craft bottled beer list is both global and well focused.  Believing that a great wine can be both delicious and affordable, no bottle tops $60.  bibi has also borrowed winecellar’s famous happy hour. bibi’s ‘Don’t worry bibi happy hour’ features select bottles for $20, a daily white and red by the glass for $6, a glass and selected small plates for $10 and runs to 8pm daily.
