In the Celtics' season opener on October 26, 2016, Thomas scored a game-high 25 points in a win over the Brooklyn Nets. He had back-to-back 30-point games for the Celtics on November 3 and November 6. On November 14, he scored a season-high 37 points. He tied that mark on December 3, as he scored 37 points in a win over the Philadelphia 76ers. On December 20, he scored a career-high 44 points, including 36 after halftime, in an overtime win over the Memphis Grizzlies where he also matched his career best for three-pointers, going 7-of-10 from outside the arc.
