Called the "punk poet laureate", Patti Smith is credited with being one of the founders of the punk rock movement with her debut album Horses.   Smith was named a Commander of the Order des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 2005 and was inducted into the Rock Hall in 2007.  Her memoir, Just Kids, much of which included the story of her relationship with Robert Mapplethorp, won the National Book award in 2010.
