Amy Charmatz’s motto is “Art Saves Lives.” Her work is fueled by a firm belief in the positive relationship between art and mental and physical health that she came to through personal experience. Charmatz writes, “I have been fighting a contiuous battle to control my body, after several brain surgeries, and a lengthy struggle with clinical depression. My art has been shaped by the process of living my life, and, now, my art shapes my life.”

Her brightly colored and highly patterned paintings are autobiographical in that they always feature a woman in the company of cats and other animals with a caption expressing her feelings and philosophy about life. Charmatz’s body of work also includes sculpture and jewelry where she uses a variety of media, including ceramic and rubber, in conjunction with found objects.

Charmatz received her BSW in social work from Seton Hall University and her MSW from the Rutgers University School of Social Work. She is a self-taught artists and has exhibited her work at the Smithsonian Institute, The Kennedy Center, The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey and other galleries throughout the country.
