Description

Glen Mhor 1980 43% ABV (alcohol by volume)

A 30 year old single malt whisky; Distillery was demolished in 1988

Glen Mhor's history is very much tied up with its neighbour Glen Albyn. It was established in Inverness in 1892 by John MacKinlay and John Birnie, a former distillery manager at Glen Albyn who had left in a fit of pique after being refused a share in the distillery by owners Gregory & Co. The name (pronounced Glen Vawr) means 'Great Glen' and production began in 1894.
In 1906 Mackinlay and Birnie turned Glen Mhor into a private company, with John(nie) Walker investing for a 40% shareholding. An event of poetic justice occurred in 1920 when Birnie and MacKinlay took over Glen Albyn from Gregory & Co, and Birnie finally got his hands on the distillery he had walked out on.
Thereafter the distilleries stayed under the same ownership until 1972 when both were sold to Distillers Company ltd (DCL, later Diageo). In 1954 Glen Mhor became the first distillery to install Saladin Box** Maltings, which were used until 1980. Ownership of Glen Mhor and Glen Albyn was transferred to Distillers Company Ltd (DCL, later Diageo)in 1972 by John Birnie's son William, but sadly the distillery was deemed to be insufficiently profitable when DCL needed to make cuts in the slump of the early 1980s, and both distilleries were closed. Glen Mhor was dismantled in 1986 and demolished in 1988. The site has now been developed into shops.

**A Saladin box is an instrument used for malting barley. It consists of a large rectangular container about 50 meters in length, and a set of vertical screws attached to a crossbar. The crossbar moves horizontally across the length of the container while the motion of the screws raise the barley from the bottom to the top. Combined with mechanical air flow across the barley for cooling, this allows for beds of barley between 60 cm (24 in) and 80 cm (31 in) deep to be turned over two or three times a day. The screws are moved and turned by a system of pulleys and belts.
