Class Portraits
oil pastels on paper
These colorful, whimsical and adorable self portraits were created by Mrs. Papandrea’s 1 st grade class. Each student was given a blank sheet of paper and palette of colorful oil pastels. Students were instructed to begin the piece by making a large U (chin) in the middle of the paper. They were then asked to add hair. Students chose a pastel that best matched their hair color and were encouraged to use drawing techniques to create a texture that would best depict their own hair texture (straight, curly, wavy). We then moved on to facial features, giving them examples of several ways to draw mouths, noses, and eyes and discussing the mood/feeling conveyed by each of the various facial feature shapes. After their faces were complete, kids explored the use of color and pattern as they made shirts/upper bodies and backgrounds for their self portraits.
