About the Designer
Julie Palmer
In 2001 Julie Palmer opened her first restaurant, Tournesol, with renowned French Chef Eric Aubriot. She designed the 3-star bistro and managed daily operations. After selling Tournesol in 2006 Julie opened Red Kiva, a lounge in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood.
During this time Julie travelled to Helsinki to visit a friend and had the “vodka over the hot coals in a sauna” experience. When she returned to Chicago, Julie worked with her father, an engineer, to develop a prototype. The initial design involved a lead filled base that was heated in a small oven, which worked, but was completely impractical. The final design for Vaportini retains all of the essential elements with a more practical approach. Fortunately, she was able to overcome her genetic disposition for over design.
In 2012, Julie left Red Kiva to bring Vaportini to market. She launched Vaportini.com in January of 2013 to critical success.
