History of the Canterbury Cross

Originally cast in bronze, the Canterbury Cross is designed after a 9th Century Byzantine cross in the form of a Saxon brooch dating ca. 850 AD that was unearthed on St. George Street in Canterbury, England in 1867. St. George Street is a tiny road that extends from the High Street in the cssentre of Canterbury, England, where churches have stood since the sixth century. In the Middle Ages, thousands of pilgrims came to Canterbury, more than to any other place in the English-speaking world for inspiration and renewal. The original Canterbury Cross is on display at the Royal Museum in Canterbury. Today, the Canterbury Cross has acquired widespread fame as a symbol of Canterbury Cathedral, the Mother Church of the worldwide Anglican Church.
