Description
Amaze your kids with a tour of the Brookhaven National Science Lab given by PS8 Grandparent Peter Wanderer.
Brookhaven National Laboratory performs basic and applied research that ranges from elementary particle physics to climate change. It is located on Long Island, about 50 miles from Brooklyn. It operates two large research facilities, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the National Synchrotron Light Source, that are used by scientists from around the world. The tour will include an overview of these facilities and a tour of the laboratory site.
Peter Wanderer is a senior physicist and head of the Superconducting Magnet Division at BNL. The Division has built magnets for RHIC and for colliders and accelerators in Europe, Japan, and China. Magnets made by the Division are in use at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, where the Higgs Particle was discovered in 2012.
