Description

2 VIP tickets for the Alma Matters and the BHS Jazz Ensemble at UC Theatre
Friday, May 12.

This super-fun concert will take advantage of the great dance floor at the UC with sets of music that will get you up and moving.  The BHS Jazz Ensemble is opening at the UC Theatre on
May 12 for two great bands -- Peter Apfelbaum's "Sparkler", and a new band made up of many BHS Jazz alumni called "Alma Matters”.  The UC Jazz Ensemble includes LeConte graduate Pepe Tepka tearing it up on percussion and is recognized as one of the top high school jazz bands in the country.

The donation is for two VIP tickets at the show, with reserved seating at a premium table with clear sight lines to the stage and a short walk to the dance floor.  Drinks will be available for purchase from the full bar.

Alma Matters

The name Alma Matters is a play on how many of the musicians in the band are alumni of the Berkeley High School Jazz Program, while also emphasizing “alma” meaning soul. A common theme throughout the band’s music and the evening’s concert is a focus on spirituals and spiritual folk songs with a message. This collaborative music under Jeff Weinmann’s direction is not just from the heart, it has deep roots that speak to matters of the soul and to social justice. The evening’s performance exemplifies what Albert Ayler said so well (and what this group of musicians expresses perfectly): “Music is the healing force of the universe.”

BHS alums performing on May 12th are:

Jeff Weinmann - drums, producer

Peter Apfelbaum - sax, keys, percussion, co-producer

Will Bernard - guitar

Keith MacArthur - bass

Josh Jones- drums

Erik Jekabson - trumpet
