This is a fascinating collection of Asian folk art beginning with the Ankle Bone Divination set from Mongolia known as Shagai. It is used in fortune telling and is thought to be the origins of dice. Also included is a vintage 100% silk Jim Thompson Thai scarf (33" square) with the brigtly painted image of a Thai elephant; a set of three Mongolian nesting boxes; a Nepalese purse; a handmade leather carving-an ancient tradition in Thailand-of an elephant and a vintage Korean $1000 Won from the 1950s. Syngman Rhee was president of South Korea from 1948 to 1960. Rhee was educated in the United States, where he received a Ph.D in International Law from Princeton University. He returned to South Korea after WWII, and was elected first President of South Korea in 1948. Rhee led South Korea during the Korean War, and remained in power after the War. He was re-elected in 1956 and 1960 by large majorities. However, few believed the elections had been fair and gave rise to widespread anti-government demonstrations. A student uprising toppled Rhee's government in 1960. Rhee escaped to Hawaii where he remained until his death in 1965.
