This is a sepia panoramic of the rare occurrence when the three Hawaii Island mountains, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai, were simultaneously capped with snow. The subjects were photographed in 1938 by the photographer T. Takemori on the Kohala Mountain Road. The cactus in the foreground were introduced to Hawaii for cattle to eat during drought.

As the name implies, Mauna Kea (White Mountain) is covered with snow during the winter months, and even during the summer it is usually possible to find small patches of snow on the north slope where the sun has not reached it. The first snow usually falls about November and comes down on the mountain to about the 11,000 foot contour. Occasionally it comes down considerably lower, as it did in 1936 when it was possible to enjoy winter sports at 8,000 feet near Hookomo.
