From the archive of the Kona Historical Society, this beautiful photo was printed on canvas and is ready to hang. It was featured in the exhibit, Kona Ranching and Kona Cowboys: Our Way of Life and shows the ranch homestead at Pulehua: "In 1873, Charles Wall started a sheep station at this remote location, later selling his lease to Frenchman Dr. Georges Trousseau who built a hale pili (house of grass and wood) at the sheep pens at Pulehua.
Pulehua was eventually sold to H.N. Greenwell and became the headquarters for his vast cattle enterprise. This is a view of the Pulehua homestead of W.H. Greenwell Ranch. This type of gate is made without metal hardware and swivels on a stone pedestal.
Within the stone walls enclosing Pulehua homestead were all the trappings of mauka life: butter house, saddle house and small blacksmith shop, cowboy house, house for the cook, koa kitchen and screened pantry to keep out rats, main house, vegetable and flower gardens, and, of course, that all important necessity, a hale liÊ»iliÊ»i (outhouse).... Horse pens, tank sheds and milking pens clustered close by, linked by wonderful wooden gates, each one a masterpiece of cowboy craft. – Maile Melrose, historian and Greenwell descendant
