Description
The King George VI era United
Kingdom penny obverse features the
bare head of George VI facing left.
The reverse shows Britannia seated
facing right, wearing a helmet, holding
a trident, hand resting on a shield, with
the words 'ONE PENNY' in the fields,
and date below. A lighthouse is in the
background to the left of Britannia.
George VI became King after his brother,
King Edward VIII, abdicated in 1936.
George VI's reign oversaw the continued dismantling of the British Empire and it's transformation in to the Commonwealth.

= 1/240 of a pound

was minted in 1937, and the last in 1951
