Description

Enjoy a beautiful Antique Cape Cod "Churn Dash" Summer Quilt with tiny hand stitching!

The pattern is also know as "Monkey Wrench" and many other names through the years. It measures approximately 83 x 83 inches.  A "summer quilt" contains no batting or other filler between the two layers of fabric. The top and backing layers are, however, stitched together with very tiny hand striches instead of simple "tacking" the layers. The stitches do not show on the right side of the quilt, only on the back because the blocks were handstitched to the backing fabric.  The backing consists of 23-inch strips, possibly loomed at 25 inches.  Made circa 1900, the condition is very good to excellent, although there is some "crisping" of the cotton fabric. The quilt is from the Farrar family of Brockton and Chatman, MA, however, it was made by a Cape Cod quilter and not a member of the family.  Brown and red prints are circa 1875.
