Description
Ever wonder about the buried treasures beneath the shores of Lake Superior? What about the ones right under your nose?! Join North Shore Geologist J.D. Lehr on a one-on-one expedition combing the edges of Lake Superior in search of agates, Thomsonite, and other riches unique to our coast. Take a closer look at one of your favorite beaches or let J.D. pick the spot. Once you’ve had enough time to enjoy the waves and fill your pockets, J.D. will take you out for lunch where you can continue to learn more about the unique geology of northeastern Minnesota.
J.D. first visited the Grand Marais area on an undergraduate geology field trip in 1979. He later earned a Master of Science degree in geology from the University Minnesota Duluth where his thesis research involved interpreting and mapping the glacial geology of an area north of the Iron Range. J.D. has applied his academic training in glacial geology throughout a career as a Professional Geologist employed by state government, the aggregate mining industry, and most recently as an independent consultant. J.D. and his wife Connie live on Lake Superior in Lutsen, MN.
