Oriental Outpost: "Buddha" Chinese, Japanese Character and Old Korean Hanja Calligraphy

Item Number: 515
Time Left: CLOSED

Description
This particular "Buddha" calligraphy from Oriental Outpost is done in Kaishu (Regular Script) style. It's written on Buddha-Orange xuan paper, with a gold background pattern. This orange color is used almost exclusively for Buddhist-related Japanese and Chinese calligraphy.
In Mandarin Chinese, this is romanized as "fo". The pronunciation is hard to duplicate in English, but it's somewhat between "foe" and "fo-ah".
While this is considered the standard Chinese character and old Korean Hanja form of Buddha, it's also seen in Japanese - especially in religious context. In Japanese, this is Romanized and pronounced "Hotoke" (Hoe Toe Kay) in Japanese.
This piece was done by Master Calligrapher Xing An-Ping of Beijing, China. Chinese and Japanese calligraphy is practiced only by those with a keen and agile hand. It is an art that dates back thousands of years. Great artists, writers, and poets of China and Japan are often admired for their calligraphy ability and style.
Says Gary Westergren, owner of Oriental Outpost, "I decided to sell Chinese art online because it seems that most people in the world know little about the artistic treasures that are available in China, and even less about the long history of Chinese art whose techniques date back thousands of years."
Gary co-founded Oriental Outpost 14 years ago when he was teaching English in Beijing. He self-describes as "a nerd, web designer, adventurer, TV co-host in China, former Marine, and current U.S Soldier (one weekend per month)."
