Description
This piece depicts the students of Classroom 5 (Gary's class) climbing Sutro Tower and planting their flag at the top.
The students designed a flag to represent their class using the principles of good flag design (thanks to the Vexillonaire episode of 99% Invisible). With the principle of meaningful symbolism in mind, the kids chose a dragon eye (to represent dragons) and plaid (for Gary's love of plaid). (The same plaid was used for the design of the paracutes for an extra element of Gary!)
The project also taught the kids how to use paint and sandpaper to texturize elements; the texture of the grass was created by repeatedly painting and sanding, and the Sutro Tower was weathered using the same technique.
Dimensions: 24” wide by 31” tall.
Materials: Pine trim, MDF, MDF trim, wooden dowels, acrylic paint, spray paint, photos.
