Description

Textile- antique fabrics; by Kate Adams

Note from the artist:

My work is the product of years of research into the quilt making traditions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. From my collection of antique textiles (c.1850-1910) I create works with these traditions in mind. All quilts are produced in 1” scale with completed pieces measuring 9” square, or smaller. Techniques used are hand and machine piecing, hand appliqué and pen and ink drawing. With the use of antique fabrics and elements of early designs, I hope to create work that is both new and yet reflective of the art of traditional American quilt making.

Today my work can be found in many private collections of folk art in America, Japan and Europe. It has been marketed through such distinguished institutions as the American Folk Art Museum, Colonial Williamsburg, The Shelburne Museum, Old Sturbridge Village, The People’s Place Quilt Museum and The Heritage Center of Lancaster, PA

Exibitions include The Designer Craftsman Shows, CraftBoston, The One-of-a-Kind Show of Chicago and The American Craft Council Shows. I have also exhibited in many one-woman shows in galleries throughout the United States and beyond. In 2009 my work was part of an invitational exhibit in Tokyo, Japan entitled Three American Masters, and a group exhibit at the University Art Museum at the University of Binghamton, New York entitled Full Spectrum: Natural Fibers, Quilts and the Textile Arts .

My work has appeared in the books, Quilts: A Living Tradition and Quilts: The Democratic Art by Robert Shaw, and in Eagle Motifs in America: Decade Art Quilt Series – 1770 to present by Susan Wildemuth.

Since 1990, I have lived and worked at my home/studio on the beautiful coast of Southern Maine. When not working in the studio I can often be found gardening, kayaking, hiking or walking the beach with friends.
