"The centennial of American existence cannot properly be observed with a reference to its women," insisted Phebe Anne Hanaford in 1876, who the proceeded to write a pioneering female Who's Who that chronicled the life stories of nearly 1,000 Daughters of America. One hundred years later, the sentiment id doubly true. To keep the nation's bicentennial birthday party from degenerating into a stag affair, we enthusiastically join Abigail Adams and "remember the ladies" of the Revolution. They are the ones who heroic deeds and patriotic notions somehow eluded the historical fraternity whose quills immortalized the birth of the United States. And so, in this year of celebration, we have included some of our favorite women of independence..."
