About Trombone Shorty. Troy Andrews was born in New Orleans and grew up in the Tremé neighborhood. At the age of 4, he appeared onstage with Bo Diddley at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. He participated in brass band parades as a child, becoming a bandleader by the age of six. In his teens, he was a member of the Stooges Brass Band. He attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) along with fellow musician Jon Batiste.

True to its title, this album contains multitudes of sound—from brass band blare and deep-groove funk, to bluesy beauty and hip-hop/pop swagger—and plenty of emotion all anchored, of course, by stellar playing and the idea that, even in the toughest of times, as Andrews says, “Music brings unity.”
