Description
This Tiffany & Co. Congressional Plate of the 113th Congress pays tribute to the Senate Appropriations Room, a working committee room and showplace of Pompeiian-style decorative arts.
RoomS-127 of the Capitol, currently known as the Senate Appropriations Room, is part of the 1850s expansion of the Capitol designed by Thomas U. Walter and constructed under the direction of the engineer-in-charge Montgomery C. Meigs. Room S-127 originally housed the Committee of Naval Affairs. In 1911 the Senate Committee on Appropriations took residence. Over the last century, the committee, which began with seven members, has grown to 30 members and 12 subcommittees and handles a budget of several trillion dollars.
The outermost band of this lovely Tiffany plate's rim replicates the foliate bands framing wall panels. The primary band consists of garlands, star medallions and other motifs at the cornice level. The innermost edge suggests an architectural dentil band. The plate's central medallion features a geometric pattern and foliage arabesques found on the ceiling above the chandeliers.
The plat echoess the sea in tones of gunmetal blues and cool grays and are contrasted by dark Prussian blue accents. The plate is embellished with an 18 karat gold edge.
