Description
"King Cane: The Story of Sugar in Hawaii"
By John W. Vandercook
This book is a first edition. Copyright 1939.
Excerpt from preface: "The story of Hawaii's growth and maturity is basically the story of sugar, the islands' primary industry. The Hawaiian archipelago was discovered late in the world's history. It was almost without natural resources. There were no mines, no waiting wealth beyond the sun, the sea's wind, and the land. Little of the land, indeed, was usable. But the settlers who came to Hawaii during the nineteenth century were of the pioneer temperament. They found sugar cane growing."
