Description

"The Journal of Prince Alexander Liholiho: The Voyages Made to the United States, England and France in 1849-1850"

Edited by Jacob Adler

This book was made by the University of Hawaii Press for the Hawaiian Historical Society. Copyright 1967.

Excerpt from introduction: "The book presents the diary of a year's foreign travel by the 15-year-old Alexander Liholiho, who later became King Kamehameha IV (1854-1863) of Hawaii. He and his 18-year-old brother, Lot Kamehameha, who became Kamehameha V (1863-1872), accompanied Dr. Gerrit P. Judd, minister of finance, on a mission to France, Great Britain, and the United States. The journey became an important part of the princes' education; it profoundly influences their later attitudes as kings."
