Description

Book One: "Kona Legends"

Translated from the Hawaiian By Eliza D. Maguire (Mrs. John A. Maguire)

Copyright 1926

Excerpt from the preface: "These few legends and stories were told us when Huehue Ranch was started in 1886. There were a number of old people living then who showed us these different places with its tales and legends. I have translated them as they are told in the simple language of the people living amongst the rural simplicity of life, cultivating their little gardens of taro and sweet potatoes, sugar cane and bananas."

Book Two: "Ka Po'E Kahiko: The People of Old"

By Samuel Manaiakalani Kamakau

Translated from the Newspaper Ke Au 'Oko'a By Mary Kawena Pukui

Arranged and edited by Dorothy B. Barrere

Illustrated by Joseph Feher

Bernice P. Bishop Museum Special Publication 51. Second printing 1968.

Excerpt from foreword: "In 1931 Bishop Museum sponsored the systematic translation of all of Samuel Kamakau's articles on Hawaiian history and culture that had appeared in the weekly newspapers Ku'oko'a and Ke Au 'Oko'a from October 20, 1866, to February 2, 1871. Two manuscripts resulted; one, containing his historical material, was published in 1961 by The Kamehameha Schools, under the title Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii. It is prefaced by a review of the life of Kamakau. The other manuscript contains Kamakau's account of the material and social culture of the Hawaiians before and during the early period of acculturation to Western ways, and is in the library of the Museum."
