Excerpt from book: "Friends of Hawaiiana have had an important part in the publication of this little book. Many of the selections have come from my long-time friend, Mary Kawena Pukui, devoted Hawaiian scholar. To her mother, Mary Pa'ahana Wiggin, we are indebted for 'Na Po.' She knew the mele as a child and taught it to her daughter. From her memory also has come 'He Nani.' Kawena and I have observed a large group of children chanting in Hawaiian and enjoying this rhythmic game led by Pa'ahana and her nine-year-old granddaughter, Pele Pukui. Because certain groups have already enjoyed these selections, Kawena and I hope that this publication may help other children to enjoy bits of their Hawaiian heritage."
