Description
Initially started as a way to boost morale of ranch workers, rodeo competition continues to be a popular sporting event throughout HawaiÊ»i. One of the most well-known stories of local cowboys competing abroad is of the success of Hawaiian cowboys Ikua Purdy, Jack Low, and Archie Kaaua, who earned top awards at the world-famous Cheyenne Rodeo in 1908. According to the Cheyenne paper, the performances of the dashing Hawaiians “took the breath of the American cowboys.”
Here, Benji Rollins from Maui competes on a bareback bronc at Honaunau arena in 1968.
