The Magic Theatre SF has a longstanding reputation as one of the pre-eminent new play incubators in the country and their plays have been nominated as Best of the Year numerous times. Established in 1967, Magic Theatre gives voice to playwrights, both emerging and established, and develops and promotes the work of theater artists. Magic Theatre's history includes premieres of over 200 new works, including Sam Shepard's Buried Child, the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979. The roster of other writers whose works have premiered at the Magic reads like a Who's Who of the American theater, including David Mamet, Michael McClure, Nilo Cruz, Rebecca Gilman, and Edna O'Brien, among many others.
