Grown at Fogarty's cool home estate in the northern Santa Cruz Mountains, as well as a second estate vineyard on a warmer ridge further south, this is so intense at first that it feels almost aggressivea tight, burled-up core of salt, tart acidity and spicy alcohol. As it takes on air its graciousness unfurls, becoming rich and substantial, accented by aromas of white flowers and toasted nuts and finishing with a briny, lemon-rind brightness. Give it two or three years in the cellar, then open it for a fatty fish dish like salt-grilled salmon shioyaki. Damiana's site expression is a powerful one, with copious stone fruits buttressed by a spine of acid and phenolic weight. It is almost always our most full-bodied Single-Vineyard Chardonnay. For all it's great richness, Damiana never comes off as fat or blowsy. Great natural acidity helps the wine keep its shape and leads to a deeply flavored palate. The drought like condition of 2014 is ever-present in the great concentration and intensity of this mountain Chardonnay. Langley Hill Chardonnay is all about balance and texture. Generous fruit with bright acidity are the hallmarks of this hillside site. Portola Springs Vineyard produces our most focused and mineral Chardonnay. The 2014 vintage has more stone fruit character, rather than citrus dominant. The vintage's concentration and intensity are on display here as well. The volcanic influence in the soil here is notable and gives the wine great energy and precision.
