Botto’s Urban Decay series, 1979-1995, focuses on the suburban, urban, and rural American landscape and culture. Bottom stated, “The tableaux are surreal situations which deal with reoccurring themes and human relationships, the politics of sex roles, the cultural effects of technology and media, and the shadow side of our nature. Because the toys and props are not real human beings, they create a distance which allows us to more objectively view ourselves. The set-ups give me the chance to examine and express with satirical humor some of my feelings about social and cultural phenomena.”

Ken Botto, a Bolinas photographer, used toys and miniature props to fabricate scenes for artworks that have Ben shown in major museums, both here and abroad. Mr. Botto focused on photographing theatrical scenes created with small found objects. Some of his pieces are now in the prominent collections of the New York Metropolitan Museum and the New York and San Francisco museums of modern Art, and are featured at the San Francisco International Airport.
