For designer Kaja Gam, a rug is an essential element in interior design. It is the specific colors, patterns, size, and shape of a rug that frame a room, becoming a virtual “fifth wall” in setting the overall look and feel of the space.

Kaja’s unique, custom-designed rugs are inspired by her Danish background, and reflect the mid-century modern Scandinavian style of clean lines, minimalist nature themes, and geometric patterns. Kaja also adopts rug styles of the past—Persian, Tudor, Oriental—to work in a more modern context. She will take a portion of a legacy rug motif, give it a modern update, and have that become the pattern for an entirely new rug.

Kaja Gam Design was established in 1993 and offers interior design consulting, space planning, and full-service interior architectural remodeling and project management services. A classically-trained artist with expertise in faux finishes and restoration techniques, Kaja often designs custom furniture and cabinetry for her clients. She takes a holistic approach to the design process, recognizing that how we live should define the spaces we live in. The end result are designs that reflect her clients' personalities and not her own.

As an ardent environmentalist and historic preservationist, Kaja is committed to design ideas and products that will support and sustain our planet and preserve our historic heritage. She views smart space planning and universal design principles as the foundation of green design and encourages her clients to select recycled, sustainable and renewable materials for their homes. She has been a member of the US Green Building Council since 2007.
