Description
Local Danish, NYC Licensed Sightseeing Guide, Else Grotrian, will take you by the hand and lead you through your choice of one of the most interesting areas in New York City.
You may choose one of the following options:
Financial District (a.k.a. FiDi)
This is where it all began in the 17th century when the Dutch settled Nieuw Amsterdam, and where the British took over in 1664 and re-named it New York.
The tour will cover City Hall with the beautiful, City Hall Park, formerly The Commons, where the Declaration of Independence was read on July 9, 1776, St. Paul’s Chapel, the oldest church in New York, newly renovated in celebration of its 250th anniversary, 9/11 Memorial and WTC Plaza, Federal Hall, NY Stock Exchange, “Charging Bull” and “Fearless Girl” statues, Bowling Green, and the Alexander Hamilton Customs House.
Brooklyn Heights
New York City’s first neighborhood to be preserved under the newly established Landmark’s Commission in 1965, it is also the most beautiful neighborhood in the City with quiet tree-lined streets, well-preserved wooden houses dating as far back as 1822, characteristic brownstone buildings, and gorgeous views from the Promenade over Manhattan’s skyline and the Statue of Liberty.
Brooklyn Heights has a rich history; this was where the first important War of Independence battle took place, and where many famous American authors have lived. One of the churches formed part of the Underground Railway that helped shelter run-away slaves from the South.
Harlem
Since ex-President Bill Clinton moved his office here in 2001, Harlem has seen a new renaissance. From being considered a slum, certain areas have now become rather fashionable. Some of Harlem’s streets are named after Civil Rights’ activists: Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and Adam Clayton Powell Jr.
The Sugar Hill area has an amazing selection of very impressive mansions, built by wealthy New Yorkers in the late 19th century. We will see the world-famous Apollo Theater, where many of America’s greatest, black stars got their breakthrough, and the Hotel Theresa, “Harlem’s Waldorf”. This is where Fidel Castro stayed and met with Khrushchev in 1960 in connection with UNs General Assembly.
