Description
Geary Claxton was one of three PSU players to have 1,500-plus points and 700-plus rebounds in career; seventh in scoring (1,542); fourth in rebounds (755) (was on pace to be third in both before tearing ACL with 15 games left in senior year); led PSU in scoring in three straight seasons; 26 career double-doubles; second-team All-Big Ten (2007), third-team (2006).
Claxton became the second straight Nittany Lion to earn a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. He led Penn State and ranked 18th in the Big Ten with a 12.7 ppg scoring average. He ranked second on the team and eighth in the Big Ten in rebounding at 6.3 rpg, tops among all freshmen in the conference.
During his sophomore season Claxton was named to the USBWA All-District I team (Penn State's first selection since Jarrett Stephens in 2000). He led Penn State in six major statistical categories including scoring, rebounding, blocked shots, steals, minutes played and at the free throw line (attempts and makes). He led the Big Ten in offensive rebounding (3.20) and posted seven double-doubles on the year. He was Penn State's leading scorer in 14 games and leading rebounder in 17 games. He posted back-to-back double-doubles in the Big Ten Tournament leading Penn State with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 60-42 first round win over Northwestern and posting 12 points and game high 12 rebounds in a 63-56 loss to No. 1 seed Ohio State in the quarterfinals.
His junior season he shared team co-MVP honors with Jamelle Cornley. He led Penn State in 10 categories including points, rebounds, steals and blocks and was just the sixth player in Penn State history to lead team in scoring in three seasons.
Sixteen games into his senior season, Claxton went done with a season-ending ACL injury. The injury ended a string of four straight double-doubles and marked the first scoreless game of his Nittany Lion career. The injury ended one of the most outstanding careers in Nittany Lion basketball history. The preseason Naismith Award candidate finished his career as the fifth all-time scorer (1,542 points) and fourth all-time rebounder (755) in Penn State history. Claxton was just the sixth player to lead Penn State in scoring in three straight seasons and, having a career year, was well on his way to joining All-American Jesse Arnelle as just the second to lead the Lions in four seasons.
