Description

Many years ago renowned author and long-time Lion's Roar contributor Alice Walker shared her writings with bidders in the form of signed editions of her books. They were snapped up with great gusto. Only one remains, its jacket a casualty of  bouncing, jostling, and tearing while in transit (see photo) to us. We offer it now to an understanding bidder. The contents are as good as ever, the signature page is unblemished, and the jacket now has an unintended bit of added character. The book is a hardcover copy of A Poem Travelled Down My Arm.

Ms. Walker, best known for the Pulitzer Prize-wining novel The Colour Purple, contributed to Lion's Roar for 15 years starting in 1997 with a feature discussion entitled The Power of Loving Kindness. Editor-in-Chief Melvin McLeod described her as "a committed social activist who has had the courage to take on difficult and often unspoken issues." In 2009 Ms. Walker's "Suffering too Insignificant for the Majority to See" written on the occasion of the first-ever African-American Buddhist retreat appeared in the May issue of the Lion's Roar. "Alice Walker describes the great toll, both personal and societal, of racism in America, and how Buddhism has helped her heal its wounds."
